The VBF (Versatile Binary Format) container is the standard for flashing Jaguar Land Rover control modules. One module update usually involves several VBF files — and knowing what each one does keeps your flashing session safe.
The VBF file types
SBL (Secondary Boot Loader) — loaded first into RAM, it opens the door for reprogramming. Never skip it.
EXE — the executable application software of the module.
DATA — calibration and configuration data matched to the vehicle variant.
SIGCFG / CARCFG — signal and car configuration files used on newer architectures.
Reading a VBF part number
JLR part numbers follow a familiar pattern, e.g. 5H22-14C047-BA: the prefix identifies the platform, the middle section the component family (14C — modules/software), and the suffix the revision. Our catalogue lists each file with its part number, type, network (CAN HS/MS), ECU address and checksum, so you can verify everything before you flash.
Practical tips
- Match the full part number including the suffix — a BA file is not an AA file.
- Keep battery support connected for the whole session.
- Flash SBL, then EXE, then DATA — in that order.
